Is Your Acai Soy Lecithin Free?
Often people assume a food is healthy without looking closely at the ingredients and acai is a case in point of this. What should be an incredibly healthy superfood brimming with antioxidants, omega fatty acids and a plethora of vitamins and minerals, is often degraded in its health status by the addition of food additives (like the emulsifier soy lecithin) and refined sugars (such as high fructose corn syrup). Thankfully you can count on Amazonia to never do this. We like our Acai the way Mother Nature does.
Here's some information on soy lecithin which explains why we think it's better left out of our Acai:
Soy Lecithin as a food additive
Lecithin is a fat that is essential in the cells of the body. It can be found in many foods, including soybeans and egg yolks, liver, however it is also used commonly as a food additive. This is because soy lecithin possesses emulsification properties. Soy lecithin (also marked as E322 in food labelling) is extracted from soybeans either mechanically or chemically using hexane. It’s actually a byproduct of the soybean oil production. Since soybeans are one of the cheapest crops in the US, it makes sense to use a cheap, natural soy derived emulsifier in food processing.
Soy is the greatest food source of phytoestrogens, and one group of researchers discovered significant estrogenic activity in soy lecithin. Interestingly, none of the soy lecithin they tested contained genistein, which is the predominant phytoestrogen in soy. They concluded that “a so-far unidentified estrogen-like compound” is present in soy lecithin that accounts for its estrogenic activity.
Soy allergies are triggered by soy proteins, so soy lecithin could potentially trigger an allergic response depending on its protein content.
Most of the soy grown in the US is genetically modified, so unless the label says ‘organic soy lecithin,’ it probably came from a genetically modified soybean.
So how can you avoid hidden nasties? It's important to ask "what is in my Acai?" and always check the ingredients. At Amazonia our mission is to deliver you the highest quality, Australian Certified Organic, purest, sustainable Acai straight from the Amazon. This means we don't include the common food additive soy lecithin, which is found in the products of other Acai brands. We are also proud to be refined sugar free, vegan and an Australian company.
To make sure your Acai is free from soy lecithin, make your own bowls with Amazonia Acai or check with your local Acai-serving cafe that they use the Amazonia brand. If they don't, ask them to make the switch to #thehealthyacai
